Two Nigerian students have developed an anti-kidnapping technology to tackle school kidnapping. The students, Chioma Abone and Emmanuela Ilok, are students of Greenspring School, Lagos.

Their idea comprise of products that use wearable technology to address the increasing abduction of school children in Nigeria.

The students, while presenting their idea at this year’s Young Tycoon Business Competition, said the plan is to have a security company that will develop two products that keep school students safe by alerting family and friends when they are in a state of emergency.

The Nigerian Senate Proposes New Minimum Age for JAMB

The Senate has commenced process of amending the establishment Act of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), with particular interest on age of candidates participating in Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The lawmakers suggested in the new amendment that 18 years should be set as minimum age for any candidate that will like to participate in UTME henceforth. This is against the current practice of candidates participating in the exercise as early as 14 years.

Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic Education; Senator Akon Eyakenyi, disclosed the information on Monday when she led other Committee members on oversight visit to JAMB headquarters in Abuja.

“We have the responsibilities of making laws and legislate. We have identified two major areas that we need to go into the process of amending the act establishing JAMB. That’s the area of support we will give,” she said.

The Committee insisted that candidates should neither sit nor be admitted into the university below the age of 18, as age has a lot to do with learning ability.

He said that the dialogue was part of efforts by the council to carry all stakeholders along in order to ensure acceptable curriculum for the country.
He added that there was the need to restructure, realign and revise the present curriculum; which NERDC introduced in 2011 to meet the current global developmental challenge.
“Ten years after the introduction of the current SSE curriculum, you will agree with me that, times have changed, the world has moved on, new ideas have been created, knowledge has advanced, new goals have been set, new skills have emerged, and new technologies have been developed.
“The only way we can catch up with these changes and create opportunities for our children to acquire new skills and competencies is to provide them with the requisite learning experiences through the revision of the curriculum, ” he said.
According to him, the goal of the council is not only to develop a curriculum that meets the needs of the present, but “one that will as well enable us to create the future that we desire as a people”.
